Nov. 15th- Leaf Cut Out/Butterfly Lighting

1.Leaf Cut Out


  • Open the photo to just the sky

  • File<Place Embed the photo of you holding the leaf

  • Remove the background of the sky from your photo of you holding the leaf

  • Go to PNGAAA and find multiple shapes

  • File Place embed those shapes on the leaf layer

  • Rasterize your shape layers

  • Merge all of your shape layers by holding down shift to select them all simaltaneously

  • Hit Command A and command arrows



  • All of your shapes should be selected by the marching ants

  • Hold down the shift button and select your grouped shaped layer and the leaf layer

  • Merge those layers

  • Hit delete

  • Flatten<File Save As<Leaflastname.jpg



    2. Butterfly Lighting

What is butterfly lighting used for?

Butterfly lighting is used for portraits. It’s a light pattern that flatters almost everybody, making it one of the most common lighting setups.

A butterfly lighting pattern is a setup that consists of a main light coming from above and in front of the subject. Thanks to this position, it highlights the nose and cheekbones – making the subject look slimmer and the face longer.

  1. Get into groups of three or four

  2. Take turns shooting, holding the reflector and modeling

  3. You should take three shots each

  4. Edit your photos using the adjustment layer

  5. Submit to "Butterfly Light" in Schoology
